2024 design project

An intangible cultural heritage of China project collaborated with the Zhuang artisans held by Donghua University in Shanghai, China. This program provides participants with an in-depth understanding of China's intangible cultural heritage primarily focused on Yunnan province. It emphasizes hands-on experiences, cultural immersion, and academic learning to enhance appreciation and preservation of traditional Chinese arts and crafts.
This design draws inspiration from the Zhuang people, the largest minority of China, which has a rich cultural heritage characterized by a blend of traditional beliefs and practices. Inspired by their indigenous religion known as Moism, which is an animist faith based on their prehistoric beliefs that worship lots of the natural forces (giant rocks, rivers, old trees, etc.) but mainly focuses on ancestor worship.
A lightweight nylon is used in this flowing silhouette which symbolizes the connection between the wearer and nature, a value that can’t be ignored in Zhuang culture. The denim patchwork on the jacket represents the traditional Zhuang brocade where geometrical patterns are commonly found. Pieces of these patchwork are from tattered clothing which is a good chance to give them a new life as well. Dark hue colors like black and navy are put to use as they are the common colors found in their traditional clothing. Embroideries are implied in the outfit as they carry auspicious meanings. Silver accessories mean a lot to the Zhuang, as they symbolize their social stratum, health, and wealth.
Ultimately, this design reflects a harmonious blend of cultural reverence and contemporary style, inviting wearers to embody the spirit of the Zhuang people and their deep-rooted connection to nature and family.
